Sex Ed

I have been reading more and more about high school horror stories lately, and it seems that every year that goes by shows more and more illustrations of just how ridiculous the people we have in charge of our children are getting.

One reason we don't let religions into public school is because most parents don't trust what their children will be told. Even Christians wouldn't trust a Christian teaching their child about Christianity if they weren't there to monitor everything being said.

Yet, we leg high schools, many unregulated by parental discretion, teach high school and junior high students about sexual education.

Last night, an article from six years ago described how a teacher in New Mexico had 15 year old students taste testing flavored condoms. After a student and parent complained, both the state school board and the department of health upheld this method as a suitable way of teaching about sex, completing ignoring the protest of the parent.

One big question I have is this: if sex education works so well in schools, how come the number of teen pregnancies and teenagers with sexually transmitted diseases increased in the decades since sex ed became big in most schools?

Shouldn't sex ed be something that the parent handles, and the school leaves alone (save for the very base of the subject?)

I think that parents MUST be vigilant when it comes to ensuring that their children have the correct information about sex, relationships, love, repercussions, etc.

Sure, the schools will have their version of what sex education is. Other kids will have a say in what our kids find out.

TV and movies teach lessons.
So, parents have a responsibility to make certain that their kids have the story straight and know facts, not rumors.

I have also heard that teen pregnancy is on the rise. I think a lot of it has to do with feelings of insecurity due to the 9/11 attack. America changed that day. We don't feel safe. Or, at least we didn't feel safe that day and for a long time after that. And the people who were little children on that day are now breeding age, or well, have the ability to have sex and breed. Not to say that they are ready to have kids!

Kids want a way of feeling human. There are such detachments and sex fills a void, so does having a baby. Well, at least the idea of having a baby seems like it could be a good way of ensuring that there is always someone there, stability. But the reality of it is that these kids are just that, kids and their brains are not developed enough to know that what they are considering is a terrible idea.

That is where parenting comes in. Establishing a relationship with your children, one where they feel secure in speaking to their parents about anything and they feel safest within the walls of their home.

I graduated about a decade ago (ugggggh) and I remember that at least a quarter of the student body 9th-12th from the time I started til the time I finished had already had kids. It became a sad, running joke.
