We live in an average condo complex. We enjoy that we have neighbors with kids around the same age. We interact at the pool, common rooms, and in the fitness centers. There are many social groups that have become created: cooking, sewing, chess, fishing, golf, etc. We recently started a parenting group. It sounded funny at first to me, as it was my wife and a few of her friends that came up with the model for the group.
They set it up so parents with children within a three-year range get together and ask what would you do questions of the group. There is a write in part, where you get to write down a specific concern or situation that may be more serious that one that you could simply blurt out. People have a few days to mull over the question and write answers. Then the answer is read aloud and comments about the situation and reply are brought to light. It seems to be something that has helped a lot of us deal with issues with raising our little ones. It also has helped us in knowing that we are not alone in our problems and that most of the other parents have been through pretty much the same exact stuff. I am wondering if other people think this is a good thing, or a sketchy thing? Is it good to get your community to help you in raising your kids or should all parenting happen in the home? Really curious about your feedback! RicoDad! |

Hi Rico,
I was a member of a playgroup and we helped each other with everything. I think it was the best thing to happen to me during that stage of my life. It was less formal. No anonymous questions. I think that might open up speculation and gossip. However, developing relationships with like minded parents is an excellent way to build confidence in your parenting and bring people into your circle that you can feel comfortable having your children around. Good luck and enjoy your friends. |
